Are meat by-products the same as meat and what about
meat meal and rendered meat? What should I look for on the dog
food ingredient list? What do you think?
Meat by-products include hooves, horn, feathers, and
hair.
WAG
(true) OR GROWL (false)? Meat is the clean flesh derived from slaughtered mammals. It is limited to the striate muscle in the skeletal muscle or the tongue, diaphragm, in the heart, or esophagus, with or without the accompanying or overlying fat. I know it sounds horrible, but remember these are dogs - and think about what they ate in the wild. Meat contains 75% water. Meat Meal is the rendered product from mammalian tissues, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in amounts that can occur in safe practices. You will see bone meal and meat meal on the ingredient label. Bone meal also includes bone. It also should contain a minimum of 4.0% phosphorus, and the calcium level should not be more than 2.2 times the actual phosphorus amount. Dogs are very susceptible to accurate calcium to phosphorous ratios. Meat meal can contain more minerals than meat, so it's not a bad product to have in your dog food. Meat meal contains 10% water as compared to meat which contains 75% water. |
