About the 3 Hungry Dogs and their owner - Susan Patton

One of the great joys of my life are my 3 dogs (and my husband).  I call them the 3 Hungry Dogs because - well if you have more than 1 dog - you know they are always mooching food.  At least mine are.

All the dogs are rescue dogs.  Polly is the oldest (11) and a terrier mix.  She is the sweetest dog - my doodlebug - but quite bossy. Penny is next in line (10) and a Springer Spaniel mix.  She is extremely loveable - my little cuddle bug - and constantly swipes the countertops with her paws to try to locate any food she can to pull off.  Oh - and a coffee drinker, which is not good for dogs.  She loves coffee and as a result we have to keep a constant watch over our coffee cups to make sure they are out of tongue's reach!  Sandy, the latest and only boy (10 months), is a mini-golden retriever mix. We found him - Free Puppies sign - on a farm.   Robin is my husband and the official 2 legger dog biscuit taster.  Now, I don't know what that says about my cooking when he thinks the biscuits are "good"!  But he is the perfect dietitian's husband, because he will eat anything and loves everything!  So he approves of everything in this book.  So do all my dogs and my friends' dogs - also official dog biscuit taste testers.

Even though I am a dietitian, I never thought about my dogs' food before Sandy.  I just assumed all dog food was good.   I know from being a people dietitian, that there is a lot of misinformation out there about human nutrition.  When I started to read about my dogs' diets, I was very confused.  Dog nutrition is even MORE difficult to decipher than human nutrition. So I ended up buying a veterinary school nutrition book and read and read until I could actually decipher a dog food label and determine each of my dog's nutrition needs.  And then I started to learn what foods dogs should avoid and what foods they should include in their diets.  And you know what?  People and dogs are very similar.  Dogs can make their own vitamin C - we need to get it from food, but other than that theycan have food allergies, be gluten sensitive, and diabetic, and prone to obesity!

As I started to check out dog food books from the library, I really found a lot of misinformation, foods that are toxic to dogs, and ingredients that cost an arm and a leg.  So that's when I started experimenting with leftover food from our meals and including just a portion of them in dog biscuit recipes.  And that's  how Some for Me...One for You came about.  It is the first of the 3 Hungry Dog Books (and only book so far).  As I head along with the books, I hope to educate you little by little with each book on accurate dog nutrition. This will help you get the most bang for your buck with nutritious dog food.

The next holiday book is coming out in October, so check back often for pictures of the dogs and husband and my weekly blog (coming soon).  Here's my bio, just so you know about my education.

Licks and 12 Paws, from Polly, Penny,  Sandy, Robin and Susan Patton
